Faith and Health Working Together

Building Healthier People, Stronger Families, and Thriving Communities.

At First United Refuge Church, we believe wellness is about more than the absence of illness. True wellness encompasses the whole person. Spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, social, and community well being.

We believe every individual is created in the image of God and deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, meaningful, and fulfilling life. That is why community wellness is central to our mission.

Through faith based outreach, community partnerships, educational programs, and innovative public health initiatives, we are working to create healthier people, stronger families, and more resilient communities throughout Elmira, Chemung County, and beyond.

Our Wellness Philosophy

Whole Person. Whole Family. Whole Community.

Many of today's challenges cannot be solved through healthcare alone. Health is influenced by where people live, work, learn, worship, and connect with others.

We recognize that spiritual wellness, emotional well being, physical health, and community health are deeply interconnected.

Our goal is to address these factors through compassionate, evidence informed, and faith centered approaches.

Community Wellness Areas

Ten Pathways. One Vision for Flourishing.

Each focus area is shaped by lived experience, research, and the conviction that every person matters.

Area 01

Behavioral Health

Restoring Hope and Strengthening Resilience

Mental and emotional well being are essential components of a healthy life. Many individuals and families face challenges related to:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Grief
  • Trauma
  • Social isolation
  • Caregiver burnout

Our Behavioral Health initiatives seek to promote resilience, hope, healing, and connection through education, support, and community partnerships. We envision a future where every individual feels supported, valued, and connected.

Area 02

Community Mental Health Worker Initiative

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

One of our future signature programs is the development of a Community Mental Health Worker model. Community Mental Health Workers are trusted individuals who help connect residents to services, resources, and support systems while reducing barriers to care. These community based leaders will help:

  • Improve access to resources
  • Promote wellness
  • Reduce isolation
  • Support families
  • Strengthen community connections

Because lasting change often begins with trusted relationships.

Area 03

Social Prescribing

Beyond Medicine

Many health challenges have social causes. Loneliness. Isolation. Housing instability. Food insecurity. Lack of purpose. Lack of community. Social prescribing connects people to community based activities and resources that improve well being. Examples may include:

  • Faith communities
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Community events
  • Walking groups
  • Support groups
  • Arts programs
  • Educational workshops
  • Community gardens

We believe connection, belonging, and purpose are powerful contributors to health.

Area 04

Healthy Families Initiative

Strengthening the Foundation of Community

Strong families create strong communities. Our Healthy Families Initiative focuses on:

  • Parenting support
  • Family education
  • Youth development
  • Relationship strengthening
  • Intergenerational engagement
  • Family wellness

We seek to create opportunities for families to learn, grow, and thrive together.

Area 05

Healthy Aging Initiative

Supporting Older Adults with Dignity and Purpose

Older adults are valuable members of our community. Through our Healthy Aging programs, we seek to promote:

  • Social engagement
  • Lifelong learning
  • Physical activity
  • Emotional well being
  • Caregiver support
  • Community connection

Our vision is to help older adults remain active, connected, and engaged throughout every stage of life.

Area 06

Community Nutrition and Food Security

Nourishing Bodies and Communities

Access to healthy food is a fundamental component of wellness. Future programs may include:

  • Nutrition education
  • Community meals
  • Food assistance partnerships
  • Community gardening
  • Healthy cooking workshops
  • Food resource navigation

We believe no individual or family should have to choose between food and other basic necessities.

Area 07

Physical Wellness

Encouraging Healthy Living

Physical health supports overall quality of life. Our wellness efforts encourage:

  • Regular physical activity
  • Healthy lifestyles
  • Preventive care
  • Chronic disease prevention
  • Health education

We aim to help community members make informed choices that support long term well being.

Area 08

Housing and Homelessness Wellness

Health Begins with Stable Housing

Research consistently demonstrates that housing is one of the most important social determinants of health. Individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability often face increased risks of:

  • Poor health outcomes
  • Mental health challenges
  • Chronic disease
  • Emergency healthcare utilization

Through partnerships and future initiatives, we seek to support housing stability, resource navigation, and community based solutions that promote long term wellness.

Area 09

Wellness Through Community

Fighting Isolation Through Connection

Loneliness and social isolation are increasingly recognized as major public health concerns. Healthy communities are built on relationships. That is why we promote opportunities for:

  • Fellowship
  • Volunteerism
  • Civic engagement
  • Community service
  • Support groups
  • Neighborhood activities

When people feel connected, communities become healthier and stronger.

Area 10

Research and Innovation

Evidence Based Solutions for Community Wellness

All community wellness initiatives are supported by the Translational Population Health Research Center, located adjacent to the church at 161 DeWitt Avenue in Elmira. The Center helps identify community needs, evaluate programs, and develop innovative approaches to improving health and quality of life. Research priorities include:

  • Behavioral health
  • Health equity
  • Population health forecasting
  • Social determinants of health
  • Housing stability
  • Community resilience
  • Social prescribing

Our commitment is simple. Use research to improve lives.
